On 1-3rd of October in Vilnius, Lithuania, NATO ENSEC COE organized International Conference “Future Operations – Resilience in Transitioning Energy” – FORTE 2024. Event covered a wide range of topics in energy security, such as the potential of various clean energy sources for NATO’s operational needs, the challenges and opportunities of transitioning military operations towards an increasing share of more sustainable energy, and the latest lessons learned at critical energy infrastructure protection.
More than a hundred event participants gained new experience from presentations given by six honorable speakers, and during seven different panel discussions. Keynote speakers, including Dr. Piotr Szymański, Mr. Ryan Duncan, Mr. Freddy Jönsson Hanberg, Dr. Oleksandr Sukhodolia, Brigadier General Luc Margotin, and Brigadier Gabrielle Follett, have shared invaluable insights into the evolving challenges and opportunities at the intersection of energy, climate, and military operations. Our sessions have covered vital topics such as: Energy Mobility and Climate change impacts on operations; The Energy Technologies of tomorrow that will shape the future of military readiness; Strategies to enhance Critical Energy Infrastructure Protection (CEIP); And the importance of EU-NATO cooperation to enhance our collective energy security.
During the conference not only problems were discussed, but people have also identified solutions. They have shared lessons learned, practical insights, and pathways forward that can enable us to lead the charge in integrating sustainable energy practices into military operations. Whether it’s through developing new technologies, fostering partnerships, or enhancing infrastructure protection.
